Assistance to Persons with Disabilities

In the case of an emergency prompting evacuation, the fire warden should assign two persons to aid the person requiring assistance. They should be the last ones to evacuate the floor, being sure to close the fire-rated stairwell door behind them. They should stay in the stairwell landing, not attempting to evacuate the disabled person unless absolutely necessary. The stairwells are rated to resist fires for at least two hours. Upon evacuating the building, the fire warden should report to the Fire Control Room. From the Fire Control Room, the incident commander will relay to the Fire Department the floor number and stairwell number of the person requiring assistance.

Two persons should accompany the person requiring assistance in the stairwell. If the response is delayed, then one person could evacuate via the stairwell and interface with the incident commander at the Fire Control Room while the other person stays with the person requiring assistance. Alternatively, if fire heats up the stairwell door, then the two persons could help carry the person requiring assistance down one level of the stairwell, using their arms or an evacuation chair, if available.
